Why You Feel Anxious, Wired, and Exhausted: The Nervous System Connection

If you’ve been feeling anxious, overwhelmed, constantly on edge, or exhausted but unable to relax, your nervous system may be playing a bigger role than you realize. While chiropractic care does not treat anxiety, supporting healthy nervous system function can help your body better adapt to stress. At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, we begin by assessing how your nervous system is functioning before creating a personalized care plan.

So many of the women we see come to us carrying a version of the same story. They are running on empty. Their mind will not slow down at night. They feel anxious for no clear reason. They are exhausted but cannot rest. They snap more easily than they want to. And they have started to wonder if this is just what life feels like now.

We want you to hear this clearly. Feeling wired and tired at the same time is not a personality trait, and it is not something you simply have to live with. It is a sign that your nervous system is stuck in overdrive. And that is something we can actually assess and support.

How Does the Nervous System Affect Stress and Anxiety?

Your nervous system has two main modes. There is the sympathetic side, which is your fight or flight response, and the parasympathetic side, which is your rest, digest, and recover mode. In a healthy, balanced nervous system, you move fluidly between the two. You ramp up when you need to handle something stressful, and then you settle back down to recover.

The problem is that modern life keeps so many of us stuck on the sympathetic side. The switch that is supposed to bring you back down is controlled largely by the vagus nerve, the longest cranial nerve in the body, running from your brainstem through your heart, lungs, and digestive system. When the vagus nerve is working well, which researchers call having healthy vagal tone, your body can calm itself, recover, and rest. When vagal tone is low, you get stuck in overdrive, and the body simply cannot find the off switch.

That is where anxiety, poor sleep, digestive issues, and that constant sense of being on edge come from. It is not in your head. It is in your nervous system.

Signs Your Nervous System May Be Stuck in Fight-or-Flight

When the nervous system is stuck in fight or flight over a long period of time, it shows up in a lot of ways that most people never connect back to their nervous system. We see all of these regularly in our practice.

  • Anxiety and a racing mind that will not slow down
  • Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep
  • Feeling exhausted but unable to truly rest
  • Digestive issues like constipation, bloating, or an upset stomach
  • Tension headaches and tight shoulders and neck
  • Feeling easily overwhelmed or quick to react
  • Brain fog and difficulty focusing
  • A weakened immune system and getting sick more often

If you are nodding along to several of these, it is because they all share a common root. A nervous system that has been running in overdrive for too long.

Where the Stress Is Coming From: The Three T’s

At Healthy Beginnings, we talk about the sources of nervous system stress through what chiropractors call the Three T’s, which are Trauma, Toxins, and Thoughts.

Trauma is the physical stress that builds up in the body over time. Injuries, accidents, posture, sitting at a desk, looking down at a phone, and the physical demands of motherhood all create tension and interference in the spine and nervous system.

Toxins are the chemical stressors the body processes every day, from processed foods to environmental exposures, all of which add to the nervous system’s load.

Thoughts are the emotional and mental stressors, and for most of the women we see, this is the heaviest one. The mental load of running a household, caring for kids, holding a job, and carrying everyone else’s needs. That kind of chronic emotional stress is not just a feeling. It is a real, physical event in the nervous system.

When all three are pressing on the body at once, the nervous system gets locked into overdrive and stays there. And it will keep running that way until something helps it reset.

How We Assess Your Nervous System

One of the things our patients value most is that we can actually show you what your nervous system is doing, rather than just talking about it. We use Insight Technology, a non-invasive and radiation-free assessment that gives us a real time picture of your nervous system through three scans.

Surface EMG measures the electrical activity in the muscles along your spine and reveals where tension and interference are being held in your body.

Thermography detects temperature patterns along the spine that show how well your autonomic nervous system, the part that runs on autopilot, is regulating your body.

Heart Rate Variability, or HRV, is one of the most important scans for anyone dealing with stress and anxiety. It measures how adaptable and resilient your nervous system is and how well it can shift between stress and recovery. Low HRV is a direct sign that the nervous system is overtaxed and stuck in overdrive, which is exactly what we so often find in people struggling with anxiety.

For adults, we may also use X-rays to understand the structural history of the spine. The scans show us where your nervous system is today, and the X-rays show us how it got there.

Can Chiropractic Care Help Support a Dysregulated Nervous System?

Our approach is centered on very specific, focused chiropractic adjustments to the areas of the spine where nerve interference is present. This is especially powerful for stress and anxiety, because adjustments to the upper neck and upper back can directly influence the vagus nerve and help stimulate the parasympathetic, rest and recover side of the nervous system.

In plain terms, focused chiropractic care helps your body remember how to find the off switch. When the interference is addressed, the nervous system is able to shift out of fight or flight and back toward calm, rest, and balance. That is when the sleep improves, the mind quiets, the digestion settles, and that constant on edge feeling begins to ease.

We want to be clear that chiropractic care does not treat anxiety as a diagnosis. What we do is support the nervous system so your body is better able to regulate itself the way it was designed to. For so many of our patients, that shift changes everything about how they feel day to day.

You Were Not Meant to Live in Survival Mode

If you have been feeling anxious, exhausted, and stuck for a long time, please know there is a piece of this that you have probably never had the chance to look at, and that is the physical state of your nervous system. At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, every new patient begins with a full nervous system assessment so we can show you exactly what is happening and where the interference is coming from.

You deserve to feel like yourself again. And it starts with understanding what your nervous system has been trying to tell you all along.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chiropractic care treat anxiety?

No. Chiropractic care does not treat anxiety as a medical diagnosis. Our focus is on supporting healthy nervous system function so your body can better adapt to stress.

Why do I feel anxious and exhausted at the same time?

Many people experience a nervous system that stays in a prolonged fight-or-flight response. This can leave you feeling mentally alert while physically depleted.

What is sympathetic overdrive?

Sympathetic overdrive refers to a state where the body’s stress response remains activated for extended periods, making it difficult to fully rest and recover.

What is Heart Rate Variability (HRV)?

HRV measures how adaptable your nervous system is and how effectively it shifts between stress and recovery. Lower HRV often indicates reduced resilience to stress.

What happens during my first appointment?

Every new patient begins with a comprehensive nervous system assessment using Insight Technology to help us understand how your body is functioning before making care recommendations.
