Learn how prenatal chiropractic care supports a healthier pregnancy through nervous system regulation, pelvic balance, and the Webster Technique to help you prepare for birth naturally.
If you’re pregnant and looking for natural ways to support your body throughout pregnancy, prenatal chiropractic care may be an important part of your wellness journey. At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, we focus on nervous system health, pelvic balance, and gentle, pregnancy-safe chiropractic care to help your body adapt to the physical changes of pregnancy and prepare for birth.
Pregnancy is one of the most remarkable things your body will ever do. In the span of about forty weeks, your body reshapes itself to grow, carry, and birth an entire human being. It is beautiful, and it is also an enormous physical undertaking. At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic in St. Charles, supporting women through every stage of that journey is one of the greatest honors of our work.
We have written before about the nervous system and pregnancy, but we wanted to go deeper this time. Because prenatal chiropractic care is so much more than back pain relief. It is about supporting the way your entire body adapts, function by function, so that you can have the most comfortable pregnancy, the most balanced body, and the most straightforward birth possible.
Why Does Pregnancy Put So Much Stress on Your Body?
From the moment you conceive, your body begins a cascade of changes. A hormone called relaxin is released, which softens the ligaments throughout your pelvis and spine to prepare for birth. That is a good and necessary thing, but it also means your joints become more mobile and less stable, which can allow misalignments to set in more easily.
At the same time, your center of gravity shifts forward as your baby grows. Your lower back curves more deeply to compensate. Your pelvis tilts. Your posture changes week by week. And through all of it, your nervous system is working around the clock to manage your health and coordinate the development of your baby.
This is why so many women experience discomfort during pregnancy that they were never expecting. It is not a sign that anything is wrong. It is simply the reality of a body doing something extraordinary, often without the structural support it needs to do it comfortably.
How Does the Nervous System Support a Healthy Pregnancy?
Just like everything else we do at Healthy Beginnings, prenatal care begins with the nervous system. The vagus nerve and the broader nervous system regulate your hormones, your circulation, your digestion, and your body’s ability to stay balanced and calm through the physical demands of pregnancy. When the nervous system is functioning with healthy vagal tone, your body is better able to rest, adapt, and support both you and your baby. When it is stuck in stress mode, everything feels harder.
This is why we assess your nervous system using Insight Technology, a non-invasive and completely radiation-free evaluation. We use Surface EMG to measure muscle tension along your spine, Thermography to see how well your nervous system is regulating your body, and Heart Rate Variability to understand how well your system is adapting to the demands of pregnancy. We never take X-rays during pregnancy. Every part of your assessment and care is chosen specifically because it is safe and appropriate for you and your baby.
What Is the Webster Technique?
If you have looked into prenatal chiropractic at all, you have probably come across the Webster Technique. It is one of the primary reasons women seek us out, and we are proud to be Webster Certified. So let us explain what it actually is, because it is often misunderstood.
The Webster Technique is not a way to manually turn a breech baby. It is a specific chiropractic analysis and adjustment of the sacrum and pelvis, designed to reduce tension and restriction in the muscles and ligaments that support the uterus. The goal is a balanced, well aligned pelvis.
Here is why that matters so much. When your pelvis is out of balance, it can create tension in the muscles and ligaments that hold your uterus, which chiropractors and midwives refer to as intrauterine constraint. That tension can limit the space your baby has to move and settle into the optimal head down position. By restoring balance to the pelvis and releasing that tension, the Webster Technique helps create the room your baby needs to move into the best possible position on their own.
Many of the women who come to us after a breech or transverse diagnosis go on to have their babies turn and to have the birth they were hoping for. We always work in close coordination with your OB or midwife throughout this process.
How We Support You Through Each Trimester
First trimester. Early pregnancy is often about supporting your nervous system through the enormous hormonal shifts happening inside you. Many women come in dealing with fatigue, nausea, and early tension. Gentle care during this stage helps your body adapt and sets a strong foundation for the months ahead.
Second trimester. As your belly grows and your center of gravity shifts, this is often when the structural work becomes especially valuable. We focus on keeping your pelvis balanced, easing the low back and round ligament discomfort that tends to appear, and maintaining your comfort as your body changes.
Third trimester. In the final stretch, our focus turns toward preparing your body for birth. We work to keep the pelvis balanced and open, support optimal baby positioning, and ensure your nervous system is as regulated as possible heading into labor. This is where the Webster Technique often becomes most important.
Why Pelvic Balance Matters During Pregnancy and Birth
Here is something we wish every expecting mom understood. The alignment and balance of your pelvis directly affects the mechanics of your labor and delivery.
Think about it this way. Your baby has to travel through your pelvis to be born. If your pelvis is balanced and the surrounding muscles and ligaments are free of excess tension, your baby has the room and the ideal pathway to descend and rotate the way they are designed to. If the pelvis is out of balance, that pathway can be restricted, which can contribute to a longer or more difficult labor.
The International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, or ICPA, which oversees the Webster Technique certification, has published work suggesting that women who receive chiropractic care throughout pregnancy may experience more comfortable pregnancies and shorter labor times. When the nervous system is balanced and the pelvis is functioning well, the body can coordinate the contractions and mechanics of labor more efficiently. That often means a smoother, more straightforward birth.
What Prenatal Adjustments Actually Feel Like
We know that some women feel nervous about being adjusted during pregnancy, and we want to put your mind at ease. Prenatal chiropractic adjustments are gentle, specific, and always adapted to your changing body. We use specialized techniques and tables designed to comfortably accommodate your growing belly, and nothing we do involves any forceful twisting of your abdomen or pelvis.
Our goal is never to force anything. It is to gently restore balance and remove interference so your nervous system and your body can do what they were beautifully designed to do.
Why Do Pregnant Women See a Prenatal Chiropractor?
And here is something important. Even if you feel great, prenatal chiropractic care still has profound value. Supporting your nervous system and keeping your pelvis balanced throughout pregnancy is one of the most proactive things you can do for both your comfort and your birth, whether or not you are in any pain.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?
Yes. Prenatal Chiropractic care uses gentle techniques that are specifically adapted for pregnancy. At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, every treatment is tailored to your stage of pregnancy and your individual needs.
What is the Webster Technique?
The Webster Technique is a specialized chiropractic analysis and adjustment designed to improve pelvic balance and reduce tension affecting the uterus. It is not a technique used to manually turn a breech baby.
When should I start prenatal chiropractic care?
Many women begin care during the first trimester, while others start later in pregnancy. Chiropractic care can provide support throughout every stage of pregnancy.
Can chiropractic help with breech positioning?
The Webster Technique does not turn breech babies. By improving pelvic balance and reducing intrauterine constraint, it helps create an environment where babies have the best opportunity to move into an optimal position on their own.
Do you take X-rays during pregnancy?
No. Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic does not perform X-rays on pregnant patients. We use safe, non-invasive nervous system assessments to evaluate how your body is functioning.

One of the things I wish every expectant mother truly believed is this:
Your body was designed for pregnancy.
That doesn’t mean every pregnancy is easy.
It doesn’t mean you won’t experience discomfort, fatigue, aches, or unexpected challenges.
And it certainly doesn’t mean every journey looks the same.
But I think we’ve reached a point where many women expect pregnancy to be uncomfortable from beginning to end. We almost accept that pain, stiffness, and exhaustion are simply part of the experience.
While pregnancy certainly asks a lot of your body, I don’t believe the goal should be to simply “get through it.”
I believe your body deserves support every step of the way.
Over the course of about forty weeks, your body does something truly remarkable.
Your hormones shift.
Your posture changes.
Your ligaments soften.
Your center of gravity moves.
Your breathing changes.
Your circulation adapts.
And all the while, your nervous system is working behind the scenes, coordinating every one of those changes while also supporting the incredible development of your growing baby.
That’s an extraordinary amount of work.
When we understand pregnancy this way, it changes our perspective.
Instead of asking, “Why does everything hurt?”
We begin asking,
“How well is my body adapting to everything that’s changing?”
That is a much different conversation.
One of the biggest misconceptions about prenatal chiropractic care is that it’s only for women who have back pain.
Yes, many women seek chiropractic care because of discomfort in their back, hips, pelvis, or neck.
But that’s only one piece of the picture.
At Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic, we focus on supporting how your body functions throughout pregnancy, not simply addressing individual symptoms as they appear.
Your nervous system plays a central role in coordinating movement, balance, posture, muscle function, digestion, circulation, and countless other processes that become even more important during pregnancy.
As your baby grows, your body is constantly adapting to create the best possible environment for both of you.
Sometimes it simply needs a little extra support to do that comfortably.
One of the areas we pay particularly close attention to during pregnancy is pelvic balance.
As your ligaments soften and your posture changes, the pelvis naturally experiences more movement than it normally would.
When the pelvis remains balanced, your body can move more efficiently and comfortably.
It also helps create the space your baby needs to move and position themselves naturally as birth approaches.
This is one of the reasons many women seek out the Webster Technique.
Despite what you may have heard, the Webster Technique is not a method for manually turning a breech baby.
Instead, it’s a specialized chiropractic analysis and adjustment that helps restore balance to the pelvis and reduce tension affecting the surrounding muscles and ligaments.
The goal isn’t to force your baby into position.
The goal is to help your body function the way it was designed to, giving your baby the best opportunity to find an optimal position on their own.
No two pregnancies are exactly alike.
Some women feel wonderful from beginning to end.
Others experience significant physical changes that make everyday activities more challenging.
Neither experience is right or wrong.
What matters is understanding that your body is communicating with you throughout the journey.
When you better understand how your nervous system is functioning and how your body is adapting, you gain valuable insight into what your body may need.
That’s why every new patient at Healthy Beginnings Chiropractic begins with a comprehensive nervous system assessment.
We don’t believe in guessing.
We believe in understanding how your body is functioning first, and then creating a care plan that’s as unique as your pregnancy.
Pregnancy is one of the most incredible things your body will ever do.
It isn’t always easy.
It isn’t always predictable.
But it is a season of extraordinary change.
My hope is that every woman knows she doesn’t have to simply “push through” those changes alone.
Whether you’re in your first trimester or counting down the days until you meet your baby, your body deserves care that supports the incredible work it’s already doing.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give yourself during pregnancy isn’t doing more.
It’s giving your body the support it needs to do what it was beautifully designed to do.
If you’re in the St. Charles area and would like to learn how prenatal chiropractic care can support you throughout your pregnancy, we’d love to meet you.
